The 2026 MFA Mandate for SMB Policies

Multi-factor authentication is no longer a nice-to-have on SMB cyber quotes. Here is what carriers expect to see in 2026.

If you still rely on password-only access for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace admin accounts, assume your 2026 renewal will get questions — or conditions — on identity.

Baseline expectations

Most markets now expect MFA on all privileged accounts and on any remote access path. Security Defaults or Conditional Access policies that require MFA are the common bar. Legacy protocols that bypass MFA (POP, IMAP without modern auth) are red flags.

Evidence that actually helps

Underwriters prefer machine-readable proof over checkbox answers. Acceptable artifacts include Conditional Access policy exports, MFA registration reports, and read-only OAuth verification from your tenant. Screenshots help only when they include dates and policy names.

Common SMB mistakes

  • MFA enabled for staff but not global admins
  • Break-glass accounts excluded "temporarily" for years
  • MSP manages MFA but nothing is in the client's name for renewal

Practical next step

Run a free readiness check, then verify MFA automatically or upload evidence before your broker submits. One verified identity row prevents a common non-renewal theme.
